Text Box: POLICY 5-13

SUBJECT: Road Grading

Low volume dirt and gravel roads shall be graded at least two times per year.  Roads shall be graded during spring while sufficient moisture is in the soil to grade out potholes and wash boarding, and to mix dirt with the gravel for sufficient fine materials so that effective compaction may be obtained, and so that a hard crust may be developed to provide a long wearing surface.  These roads shall again be graded during fall to prepare the roads and drainage ditches for winter weather.  If summer selective grading has moved the gravel to the roadside, this gravel shall be bladed back onto the road surface   to develop a crown for winter conditions.  During winter months, additional gravel may be placed on roads at locations needed to provide adequate traction.  Selective grading shall be done at times and locations as necessary to correct drainage problems, potholing or wash boarding.
